Can you imagine a horse that loves to swim?
Hippos are large semi-aquatic mammals (animals that don't live exclusively in water, but spend a lot of time in it) native to Africa south of the Sahara Desert. These amazing animals spend most of their time in the water, and in fact, the name hippo comes from the ancient Greek word for "river horse".

While hippos are large and somewhat clumsy on land, they are incredibly graceful underwater and can hold their breath for up to five minutes! Hippos are also submarine-like - their nostrils and ears close when they enter the water! One of their most unique features is their powerful jaws, which can open nearly 180 degrees.

They're big, but they're herbivores.
Hippos are herbivores and eat mostly plants like grass, but don't be surprised to learn that they have some of the biggest teeth in the world! A male hippo's teeth can grow up to 51 centimeters long - that's a lot of teeth to measure on that 30-centimeter ruler you carry to school!
